Alberta Unbound: Stories for Change

In June 2021, the Canada Labour Code was amended to add a new federal day of reflection, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, to be observed annually on September 30.

As part of the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association’s actions towards reflection and reconciliation, we asked all member magazines to send us articles showcasing Indigenous voices and experiences so that we can amplify these stories and voices through our platform and social media channels.

We recognize that this is a small step towards creating better equity but believe it is an important step as the association works towards reconciliation to help amplify Indigenous voices and experiences.

AMPA remains committed to promoting historically excluded groups and condemning racism. We stand in solidarity with Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour in the fight to end racism by working to increase diversity in the magazine publishing sector and the amplification of BIPOC voices.

What we’re doing

  • AMPA, in partnership with the Magazine Association of BC, launched a national survey in 2020 to collect information on representation of equity-seeking groups and diversity in content within the industry. The survey will be used to determine strategies and initiatives that will contribute to a more diverse and inclusive magazine media industry.
  • We launched the Indigenous Internship Program, to create opportunities for Indigenous peoples to explore and pursue careers in magazine media supported by mentoring and networking opportunities.
  • We’ll continue to offer yearly diversity, inclusion and anti-racism training webinars.

AMPA recognizes the battle against racism is ongoing, and we’re committed to confronting the systemic racism within Canada and Canada’s publishing landscape.
