Funding Resources

Alberta Magazines can access grants and subsidies both provincially and federally. Below is a list of grants that are available to magazines. Be sure to check criteria and eligibility thoroughly before applying.

Project Grant Stream Guidelines

The Organization Project Grant assists Alberta-based companies engaged in the production of books, magazines or sound recordings, as well as some screen-based projects. Grants may be used to support projects in art production, training, career development, marketing and research. This grant, under the Alberta Media Fund, supports the growth and sustainability of Alberta’s cultural industries by helping them employ talented professionals, develop intellectual property and create quality products.

Organizations can apply for up to 100% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $20,000. All applications are assessed by an expert panel who make funding recommendations to the department.

Eligible organizations
To be considered eligible, your organization must be primarily engaged in the production of:

  • books/eBooks
  • magazines/eMagazines
  • sound recordings
  • film/video

Your organization must also be:

  • registered and in good standing with the appropriate legislation
  • based in Alberta
  • be majority owned by Alberta residents
  • Eligible magazine publishers

To be eligible to apply, you must publish or plan to publish magazines that:

  • are of literary, artistic or children’s interest (500 copies in print)
  • have editorial policies controlled by an editor/editorial board
  • have a policy that the copyright for all published material resides with the author
  • have a clear distinction between editorial content and advertising

Important Deadlines:
Application deadline June 1, 2021 at 11:59 pm.
Intake opens 60 days prior to the deadline.
If the deadline falls on a holiday or a weekend, it will be extended to the next working day at 11:59 pm.

Cultural Industry Organizations Operating Grant

The Cultural Industry Organization Operating Grant provides funding to help cover annual operating expenses for organizations that publish books, magazines or sound recordings.

Operating Grant Stream Guidelines

This grant, under the Alberta Media Fund, supports the growth and sustainability of Alberta’s cultural organizations by helping them employ talented professionals, develop intellectual property and create quality products. Eligible organizations receive a base amount as determined by their average cost of goods sold over a 3-year period

Eligible organizations

To be considered eligible, your organization must be primarily engaged in the production of:

  • books/eBooks
  • magazines/eMagazines
  • sound recordings

Your organization must also:

  • be registered and be in good standing with the appropriate legislation
  • be Alberta based and in operation for at least 2 years
  • be owned by Alberta residents
  • have published or produced at least 2 products 12 months prior to the application date

To be eligible to apply, you must publish or plan to publish magazines that:

  • publish magazines of literary, artistic or children’s interest (500 copies in print)
  • have editorial policies controlled by an editor/editorial board
  • have a policy that the copyright for all published material resides with the author
  • have a clear distinction between editorial content and advertising

Canada Periodical Fund

The Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) provides financial assistance to Canadian print magazines, print community newspapers and digital periodicals, to enable them to overcome market disadvantages and continue to provide Canadian readers with the content they choose to read.

Aid to Publishers

The Aid to Publishers component is designed to provide eligible Canadian publishers of print magazines, print community newspapers and digital periodicals with the financial support they need to produce and distribute high-quality, Canadian editorial content for Canadian readers.

  • Magazines – For print magazines, funding is granted based on a formula that takes the total number of eligible copies distributed over a 12-month period as well as eligible editorial expenditures incurred during that period.
  •  Digital Periodical – For digital periodicals, funding is granted based on eligible editorial expenditures incurred over a 12-month period.

Business Innovation

The Business Innovation component offers support for projects to eligible small and mid-sized printed magazine and digital periodical publishers.

The Literary Publishing Projects component of Supporting Artistic Practice funds Canadian publishers of literary books and magazines committed to developing and promoting Canadian literary writers through the publishing process.
